June Market Report

With the price of diesel increasing by the minute, Spanish hauliers on stop, heavy rainfalls in Europe, and the euro working against us it is time to look closer to home for our produce.

Thankfully summer cauliflowers, broccoli and courgettes have all started to come through although still a bit on the pricey side. Shallots are non existent and we wait for the new season ones to arrive shortly. As for root veg we have moved on to spanish parsnips and french carrots. Potatoes are beginning to be a problem and expect prices to continue to rise as stocks run dry. Chantenay carrots have also finished. The english asparagus season is now all but over, why not try some samphire instead? Salads are improving in quality and price and we have some really tasty english tomatoes and cucumbers in stock.

When it comes to fruit we have some wonderful english raspberries and strawberries. Super sweet italian cherries are also a must ! Nectarines and peaches are also nice especially the white fleshed . Outdoor rhubarb is fine, not forgetting the first of the the gooseberries just beginning to arrive.

What’s in season – June

By the middle of the month, there is a wealth of fruit and vegetables to choose from. New potatoes are more plentiful, asparagus continues. New carrots come in at the end of month as do soft fruits including blackcurrants, strawberries, gooseberries, cherries. Tomatoes are in, broccoli is beginning, cauliflower comes at the back end of the month. Lettuce gets into full flow as do fennel, peppers, broad beans, Chinese leaves, and green beans grown in tunnels. Herbs coming in.
